Water and Wastewater Pipelines

Welded Steel Pipelines (WSP) WELDED STEEL PIPE, STANDARD DIAMETER AWWA-CERTIFIED C200 IS USED THROUGHOUT THE WATER CONVEYANCE, OIL AND GAS TRANSPORT INDUSTRY AND AGRICULTURAL AND UTILITY COMMUNITY. EXAMPLES OF STEEL PIPE APPLICATIONS INCUDE: POTABLE WATER TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION, PLUMBING IN LARGER INDUSTIAL AND MANUFACTURAL FACILITIES, COMMERCIAL GREENHOUSES AND LARGER SCALE FIELD IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE SYSTEMS. WELDED STEEL PIPE (WSP) IS INITIALLY ROLLED INTO FLAT SHEETS, PLATES OR STRIPS AND THEN THEIR EDGES JOING TOGETHER BY DIFFERENT TYPES OF WELDING METHODS, DEPENDING UPON THE STEEL PLATE THICKNESS. WSP WELING METHODS USED INCLUDE ELECTRIC RESISTSNCE WELDING (ERW), LONGTUDINAL SUBMERGED ARC WELDING (LSAW) AND SPIRAL SUBMERGED ARC WELDING (SSAW). WSP JOINT ENDSS ARE TYPICALLY CONNECTED IN THE FIELD USING CARNEGIE JOINT, ROOLED GROOVE JOINT, LAP-WELDED JOINT, BUTT-WELDED, BUTT-STRAP, FLANGE JOINT, MECHANICAL COUPLING JOINTS. Reinforced Concrete Cylinder Pipe (RCCP) REINFORCED CONCRETE CYLINDER PIPE INCORPORATES SPECIFIC JOINT TYPES FOR DIFFERENT INTERNAL WATER PRESSURE APPLICATIONS. THESE INCLUDE LOW PRESSURE VERY HIGH PRESSURES, INCLUDING LOW PRESSURE CULVERTS AND STORM SEWERS, LOW-PRESSURE IRRIGATION AND SANITARY SEWERS, AND HIGH- PRESSURE POTABLE WATER TRANSMISSION PIPELINES: RCCP PIPE JOINT ARE CONNECTED WITH THE TYPE OF JOINT REQUIRED FOR THE PRESSURE APPLICATION. THE JOINT TYPES NCLUDE RUBBER GASKET JOINTS (O-RING OF PROFILE GASKETS), TONGUE AND GROOVE JOINTS, BELL ANDSPIGOT JOINTS, BAR-WRAPPED AND CYLINDER PIPE JOINTS. Horizontal Direction Drilling (HDD) THIS TRENCHLESS METHOD OF INSTALLING WATER, SEWER AND STORM DRAIN PIPELINES WAS FIRST USED IN THE OIL DRILLING INDUSTRY WHEN DRILLERS ON SINGLE LOCAITON, TRADITIONALLY VERTICAL-DRILLING OPERATIONS, LEARNED THEY COULD SUCCESSFULLY DRILL FOR MORE PORTIONS OF THE LEASED OIL FIELD BY BOTH ANGELING THE DRILL TO THE 7 O'CLOCK POSITION (DRILL NORMALLY STRAIGHT DOWN IN 6 O'CLOCK POSITION) AS WELL AS THE 8 O'CLOCK POSITION. IN ADDITION TO THIS, THEY ROTATED THEDRILL RIG HORIZONTALLY, SO THAT, IN THIS SIMPLE EXAMPLE, THEY COULD DRILL MORE 7 AND 8 O'CLOCK DRILLS WITH EVERY 10 DEGREES OF HORIZONTAL ROTATION. THAT APPROACH WITH A 10,000 FOOT DRILL ALLOWS 36 ROTATIONS, WITH 2 DRILLS PER SETTING = 72 ADDITIONAL DRILLS FROM THE ONE INITIAL OIL RIG PLATFORM LOCATION AND ONE VERTICAL DRILL. THIS HDD APPROACH IS VERY EASY AND STRAIGHT FORWARD IN THE UTILITY BUSINESS, AND CAN AVOID OR GRAETLY MINIMIZE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS VERSUS USING A TRADITIONAL CUT-AND-COVER TRENCH PREECT. HDD FOR BURIED UTILITIES FIRST DRILLS A PILOT HOLE ALONG THE ENGINEERED PATH, A PATH DEEP ENOUGH TO KEEP TO KEEP THE PRESSURIZED DRILLING FLUID FROM BREAKING THROUGH TO THE SURFACE, WHILE AVOID GOING TOO DEEP AND ENCOUNTERING VERY DIFFICULT DRILLING CONDITIONS DUE TO BEDROCK. Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP) DUCTILE IRON PIPE IS A BETTER, STRONGER, YET MORE FLEXIBLE TYPE OF PIPE THAT ITS LONG-TIME PREDEDCESSOR CAST-IRON PIPE. THEY ARE BOTH IRON-CARBON ALLOYS, BUT DUCTILE IRON INCLUDES THE USE OF MAGNESEUM, LEADING TO ITS GRAPHITE CARBON MICROSTRUCTURE FORMING SPHEROIDAL GRAPHIC NODULES. THIS TYPE OF GRAPHITE FLAKES MODULE LEADS TO A PIPE THAT IS LESS BRITTLE OR MORE FLEXIBLE, BECAUSE OF ITS ABILITY TO GROW PIPE MATERIALS IN THE MORE ROUND, SPHEROIDAL NODULES SHAPE, INSTEAD OF SHARP FLAKE, GRAPHITE NODULE. DUCTILE IRON'S RELATIVELY HIGH FLEXIBILITY AND STRENGTH, RESULTS IN A STRONG, YET MORE FORGIVING TYPE OF CONDUIT. ALTHOUGHT RELATIVELY HEAVY AND DIFFICULT TO REPAIR, DIP IS OFTEN STILL THE PIPE OF CHOICE IN SELECTED MOUNTAIN TOWNS AND WATER AGENCIES. ADDITIONALLY, IF THE CAT IRON-PIPE WAS BURIED IN AGGRESSIVE OR CORROSIVE SOILS, WEAK SPOTS AND LEAKS WILL LIKELY APPEAR, REQUIRING CREWS TO WRAP THE PIPE JOINTSD IN A POLYETHYLENE SHEET OR APPLYAND INCREASE THE PROJECT BUDGET AND COMPLETION SCHEDULE. Polyvinyl Chloride Pipe (PVC) POLYVINYL CHLORIDE PIPE, STANDARD DIAMETER AWWA-CERTIFIED C900 DR 25 to DR 14 PER ANSI/ASTM D1784, FOR MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRIBUTION, FIRE PROTECTIN AND FORCE MAINS POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC), LARGE DIAMETER AWWA-CERTIFIED C905 DR 25 to DR 18 PER ANSI/ASTM D1784 FOR MUNICIPAL WATER TRANSMISSION, DISTRIBUTION AND FORCE MAINS
San Vicente 102-inch Welded Steel 11 Mile Pipeline and 144-inch Tunnel
Lead Pipeline Designer for this $ 300 Million 102-inch diameter welded steel raw water pressure pipeline and tunnel project, including a buried, pre-stressed concrete surge control facility, shaft final linings and a tunnel unwatering pump station system. All steady state hydraulics was included, as well as the technical review of hydraulics transient analyses by another team consultant. He led the effort for the pre-design and preliminary design of this project before changing firms. A specialized 350-foot vertical drop structure, deaeration chamber and overflow tunnel highlighted the surge control facility’s preliminary design. This was subsequently revised to a cut and cover inlet and outlet design. This project was a key portion of the SDCWA multi-$Billion Emergency Storage Project
Olivenhain Water District 78-inch and 48-inch Welded Steel Pipelines
Project Manager and Lead Designer of 78-inch, 350 cfs, 380 psi Olivenhain Pipelines project in San Diego County. This 78-inch, 14,000-foot-long welded steel pipeline is paralleled by a 48-inch welded steel pipeline from the water filtration plant constructed by the Olivenhain Municipal Water District near the base of the new Olivenhain Dam. The very steep and rocky terrain and aggressive design schedule made this water transmission pipeline project a challenging assignment. Connections to the SDCWA's existing 108-inch Raw Water Pipeline 5 were included in the design. Mr. Heden completed the preliminary design and took this project to the 80% final design level. It remains as one of the Highest Pressure Pipeline in the San Diego County Water Authority's (SDCWA) Regional Conveyance System
14 Mile Orange County Groundwater Replenishment 78"/72"/66"/60"
Project Manager and Lead Designer on this 14-mile long, 78-inch, 72-inch, 66-inch and 60-inch diameter pressurized, welded steel and concrete cylinder pipeline conveying advanced treated (MF-RO-UV) wastewater effluent up to new injection wells and existing groundwater replenishment/spreading basins. This pipeline is being constructed primarily in an above-grade earthen fill levee, rather than in a conventional undisturbed earthen trench. Complete reliability must be achieved as any leakage in the pipeline could lead to a failure in the flood protection levee and subsequent damage to of fatalities associated with adjacent, dense residential and commercial real estate. Mr. Heden oversaw all work on this project from the proposal stage through pre-design and preliminary design.

Project Manager and Lead Designer for a new 66-inch High Pressure Potable Water Concrete Cylinder Pipeline that Conveyed Excess Treated Water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California west to the Owner's new Aquifer Storage and Recovery Well Field for subsequent Withdrawal vial a Submersible Well System During Droughts and/or High Water Use Periods of the Year. Alternative Alignment Resulted in a $2,000,000 Savings to Owner versus Pre-Design Alignment.

Project Manager and Lead Designer for a New 16-inch High Pressure (305 PSI) 2,140 LF Fusible PVC C-905 Potable Water Transmission Main Installed Beneath the San Luis Rey River Near Bonsall, California Using Sliplining and Pressure Grouting Methods. Phase 1 Involved Sliping a Failed 24-inch HDD Steel Casing With the Fusible 16-inch C-905 PVC Pipe. Phase 2 Has Been Designed as a Dual Carrier Pipe HDD and Will Be Completed in the Future.
260 PSI Water Pipeline in Caltrans Bridge
SR76 / Interstate 15 Road Widening Project and 12-inch Water Transmission Pipeline

Project Manager and Lead Designer for a New 12-inch High Pressure (260 PSI) 3,200 LF Welded Steel and Ductile Iron Potable Water Transmission Main Installed From Old Highway 395 East Through a New SR76 Overcrossing Structure Over Interstate 15. From there it Continued East Another 2,500 to Pankey Road near Horse Ranch Creek. The Welded Steel Portion Within the Caltrans Overcrossing Structure was Encased in a Steel Casing and Fitted with a Longitudinal Expansion Joint.

Dual Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Water and Sewer Creek Crossings

Project Manager and Lead Designer for a New 12-inch HDD High Pressure (260 PSI) Fused DR 14 PVC Water Transmission Pipeline Under Horse Ranch Creek on the South Side of SR76. HDD Design Approach was Required to Avoid Multiple Environmental Impacts and the Rebuilding of the Creek Channel Section, Including Large Rip Rap Sections. The SDR 18 Fused PVC Sanitary Sewer Force Main was Designed along the Opposite/North Side of SR76 and Parallel to the Highway as well. It will be Constructed via HDD by the Same Contractor, Saving Mobilization Costs and Avoiding the Same Environmental and Channel Re-Construction Costs and Delays.

Project Manager & Designer of a 18-inch, 1,400 LF Horizontally Directionally Drilled (HDD) High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Sewer Forcemain Under a Sensitive Raparian River Habitat portion of the San Luis River in the small town of Bonsoll, CA north of Oceanside. This was an Emergency Project as the Existing Cast Iron Force Main had Failed, Spilling Thousands of Gallons into the San Luis Rey River and downstream into the Pacific Ocean.
Seawater Return Pipeline on Scripps Institution of Oceanography Campus

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) ia Pit-Launched Methodology Project Involving Thousands of Linear Feet of Gravity PVC Seawater Return Pipelines, Manholes, Metering Stations and an Ocean Outfall Discharge on the 100 Year-old Scripps Institution of Oceanography Campus of UCSD. The Scripps Aquarium and All Seawater Research Facilities Were Included. Services Included Preliminary Design, Final Design, Permitting and Services During Construction. Work Completed in 2007.

Project Engineer and Lead Designer for a High-Pressure Energy Dissapation Structure Equipped With the Largest Set of Slide Gate Energy Dissapation Valves Used on a USBR Project at the Time (1990). Design Included Large Diameter Ductile Iron Pipelines Up to 72-Inch Used for Long Siphons Under Low Valleys Along Canal Route.
San Juan Creek Road Extension: 10-inch PVC Water; 12-inch PVC Sewer and 8-inch PVC Crossings of a 54-inch Storm Drain, and a 16-inch High Pressure Aviation Fuel Pipelines

Project Manager and Lead Designer for a New Parallel Potable Water Main, Recycled Water Main and a Sanitary Sewer Main Project Along an Rough-Graded Section of San Juan Creek Road Extension in Eastern San Juan Capistrano, CA. Constraints at each end of the Project included designing the 12-inch Sewer under a 16-inch High-Pressure Aviation Fuel Pipeline and over a 54-inch Storm Drain Pipeline.

Project Manager for Preliminary and Final Design of Four Critical Utilities Located Within Caltrans Rights-of-Way Along SR76 Between Horse Ranch Creek Road and Pankey Road. The 270 PSI High Pressure Water Transmission pipeline Needed to be Supported Above Ground and on Braces Against the Side of the Existing Horse Ranch Creek Bridge. The Sewer Force Main Needed to be Designed Under Horse Ranch Creek Using HDD Methods.
Miramar Road 48" Reclaimed Water Pipeline
City of San Diego MWWD (Owner):
Project Manager & Designer of a 48-inch and 36-inch High-Pressure, 33,000 LF Cement Mortar Lined and Coated Welded Steel Pipe (CML&C WSP). Proejct Conveyed Highly Treated Wastewater Effluent East to commercial and Industrial Reclaimed Water Users Along Miramar Road and I-15 in Northeast San Diego. The Pipeline Crossed I-15 Within the Carroll Canyon Road Freeway Overcrossing, sving the City of san Diego $500,000. Night Work Was Required Due to the High Traffic Volumes Along Miramar Road, Carroll Canyon Road and I-15.
Lower Zone 30" Ductile Iron Water Transmission Pipeline
San Bernardino, CA Water Department (Owner):
Project Manager & Designer of a 30-inch High-Pressure, 22,400 LF Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP) Cross-Town Project. Project Included Assisting City Staff in Owner-Procurement of All Pipe and Fittings. Significant Traffic Control Plans Were Required Due to High Traffic Volumes and Limited Availability of Lateral Work Space. The Contractor Was Able to Receive Additional Compensation for Early Completion and Submitting Limited Change Orders as the Owner Needed The Project Installed and Operational in Order to Initiate Maintenance Activities on Other Facilities Within Their Delivery System.
Deer Valley Resort High Pressure Welded Steel Snowmaking System
Deer Valley Ski Resort (Owner):
Project Manager & Lead Engineer for All of the Welded Steel Pipelines Installed Within the 3 Primary Ski Runs on the Lower Half of the World Class Park City, Utah Ski Area. Pipelines Initiated from the Base Area Pump Station Located at the Shore of the Resort's Lake System. Presusres Near 433 psi Were Generated at the Pump Station. Snow Machines Located at the Edges of the Ski Runs Were Connected by Steel Pipe Laterals to the Main Snowmaking Transmission Pipelines. Steep Slopes and Rock Trench Excavating Challenged Contractors, but Did Not Delay Them Whatsoever.
